PHOENIX (AP) - Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio plans to have his deputies put up white wooden crosses near the sites where authorities find bodies of immigrants who are dying in the desert. Arpaio says four bodies have been found in the last four days near Gila Bend after succumbing to the scorching desert heat. Two others were rescued this week.
Arpaio says the crosses will serve to remind those crossing the desert of the dangers involved in the trek from the border with Mexico. Each one will be numbered and assigned GPS coordinates. The sheriff says that will aid his deputies in their efforts to rescue people who find themselves near one of the crosses and call for help when in distress.
