SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The veteran district attorney in a largely rural Northern California county is caught in a story fit for the tabloids.
The 65-year-old grandfather has been named as a suspect in a fire that gutted the home of a former escort with whom he had an affair.
Sutter County District Attorney Carl Adams was one of several suitors of 32-year-old Sarah Garibay. She showed police text messages from Adams saying he was jealous of her other lovers.
An affidavit says Adams lied to investigators when they first asked him about whether he had sex with Garibay. He met her in 2010 when he prosecuted a case in which she testified.
The affidavit says Adams also might have tried to steer the fire investigators toward one of Garibay's other boyfriends.
Adams hasn't returned calls seeking comment.
The state attorney general's office is now overseeing the investigation.
