DIAMOND BAR, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a big-rig truck has smashed into California Department of Transportation vehicles and a crew picking up litter on a Southern California freeway, injuring nine people. Spokeswoman Maria Raptis says the rig struck a Caltrans van carrying maintenance workers and a two-ton safety truck at about 10 a.m. Wednesday on State Route 60 in the Diamond Bar area.
The Highway Patrol says a fourth car also was involved. The crash injured two Caltrans workers along with six people who were performing probation community service by picking up litter on the freeway shoulder. Raptis says they suffered gashes, bruises and neck and back injuries. TV reports also showed rescuers removing the truck driver from his rig. None of the injuries are considered life-threatening. The crash shut several eastbound lanes.
