ATLANTA (AP) - Fulton County prosecutors say an ex-Georgia Department of Corrections deputy director has pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $20,000 from the agency.
District Attorney's spokeswoman Yvette Jones says 42-year-old Benjamin Hopkins was indicted on 35 counts of identity fraud for using purchasing privileges with a government contractor to buy electronics for his personal use. Hopkins pleaded guilty in Fulton County Magistrate Court Wednesday and was sentenced to eight years of probation.
An investigation was launched in late 2010 after a vendor got suspicious when an Xbox game system and two iPods were charged to the department. Authorities say Hopkins made 35 unauthorized purchases over the course of about two years.
Hopkins is ordered to pay full restitution to the state, a $5,000 fine and serve 300 hours of community service.
