ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves have placed center fielder Nate McLouth on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle on his left side and recalled outfielder Jordan Schafer from Triple-A Gwinnett.
The team made the move Monday, an off day before starting a two-game series at Pittsburgh. Schafer is returning to the big leagues for the first time since 2009, when he began the season as the starting center fielder and homered in his first career at-bat.
He was shipped to the minors after two months with a .204 average. McLouth injured his oblique Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels when he checked his swing on a 1-2 pitch in the first inning. That same day, the Braves placed right fielder Jason Heyward on the DL with lingering stiffness in his right shoulder.
