ATLANTA - The special teams are barely noticed - until something goes wrong. At Georgia Tech, they're getting a lot of attention.
The Yellow Jackets have struggled all season with their kicking, coverage and return teams. Shanked punts, missed field goals, fumbled returns - there's been plenty of mishaps when the offense and defense are off the field.
Coach Paul Johnson is befuddled by the problems. He says the team normally performs well in practice, but something always seems to go wrong when it actually counts.
Last week, the Yellow Jackets surrendered a touchdown on a fumbled punt return and gave up a 48-yard kickoff return that set up another score in a 24-7 loss to Miami.
That certainly won't do when No. 6 Clemson comes to town Saturday night.
